Headshots Don’t have to be photographed inside a studio with studio lighting

As you can see in this headshot photo of the Specialist London Personal Branding Photographer, Josie Gray, a good headshot photo does not have to be taken in a studio - a great headshot photograph can be photographed outside using just natural light, and still be a great headshot photo..

Good headshot photography can make all the difference - as you can see here, a good headshot photographer can capture headshots in a more natural style, whilst still coming over as business-like and professional, which helps the subject, (the subject is the person who is shown in the headshot), show that they are reliable, approachable, genuine, keen and trustworthy, a hard worker etc.

And the difference between a headshot and business portraits (which also can be called personal branding photography - find out more about Personal Brand Photography by clicking here), is what style and crop of photograph of the subject is created, and how the photograph can be used. A headshot is generally a more closely cropped photograph of just the person's head and shoulders, so the viewer cannot see much of the surroundings, and the subject in the headshot is usually looking straight to camera so that the person's face is clear and easily visible.

Headshots photographs are generally used for official business use, such as a LinkedIn profile photo, or on a website as a photos of the team or each of the business directors on the About page of the business. In the case of team headshots where a headshot photo is needed for every member of the team, or member of staff, professional photographers will try to photograph all of the headshots photographs, can be all in one particular, corporate, style (so for example, every team member shown in a similar style headshot, with a similar background, and similar lighting for each one of the team members or staff members headshots.

Depending on the number of headshots to be captured, it may be possible to capture all the headshots in natural light, but if it is important to have a similar lighting throughout all team members headshots, due to the changes in natural daylight, the weather, clouds, or natural light as it moves through the day and across the windows, then a more even light can be controlled by shooting with more even and controllable studio lighting.

The headshot photo is generally used more to show what the business person looks like, to show for example, that the subject is portrayed as helpful, genuine, professional, approachable, hard-working.

In comparison, a portrait, for the most part, is generally more of a photograph that is more artistic in its creation, and can often tell more of a story about the subject - (the subject means the person you can see in the photograph), the subject may not be looking at the camera.

A business portrait or personal brand photography is different from headshots photography. Personal branding photography can include headshot photography and personal brand photography tells us more of a story of the person behind the business. So you could say that if a headshot is the business handshake, then the personal brand photography is the conversation that follows.

What should you wear for a professional headshot?

This is often the first thing we are asked when businesses enquire about having their team's headshots photographed.

  • Wear well-fitted clothing, in good condition, that is not too tight.

  • Avoid low-cut tops and plunging necklines for business.

  • Long sleeves are better for headshots than short sleeves. ...

  • Headshots are usually for business profiles, so business dress, or a smarter, clean, well-pressed with no creases, version of whatever you usually wear for work can be a good place to start.

  • Lighter colours nearer your face with a dark jacket over, or a plain, darker jacket / top with a lighter neck scarf, or tie can look more business-like.

  • Professional hair and make-up are advisable - or if you wish to apply your own makeup, please apply a little more than you would usually wear on a usual business day, but not as much makeup as you might wear to go to your company awards ceremony or for a New Year's eve sparkle party!

  • Please have clean, brushed hair (bring a hairbrush or comb so you can look neat, tidy and organised). If you plan to wear your hair tied up or in an up-do - then please wash hair the day before.

  • For Actors, plain darker colours can be less distracting to the viewer's eye - if you want the viewer to notice your face and features, keep your choice of clothing to plain single colours and smaller or no pattern.

  • Choose clothing that does not show any commercial brand advertising, business names, logos or graphics - unless this is your own business name or your company/team uniform and branding/logos.

  • Unless you are a travel company, sunglasses or darker glasses may be best avoided if possible, or wear on your head or in your top pocket, the purpose of a headshot is to show your eyes and face, so sunglasses are best avoided as the viewer cannot see your eyes. Not showing your eyes in a headshot can make the subject seem less trustworthy.
